CosPaTox – final Statement

The CosPaTox Consortium officially finalized its project time on June 30, 2024, following the successful dissemination of its voluntary industry Guideline, its scientific Dossier, the Substance List as well as the Worst-Case Calculation Tool in April 2024. Over the past three years, our dedicated members have worked tirelessly to implement innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure the safe use of recycled plastics in packaging materials for cosmetics and home care products. Our comprehensive publications stand as a testament to the hard work and collaboration of everyone involved, from the initial planning stages through to final implementation and execution.

While the primary goals of the project have been successfully achieved, we remain committed to advancing the safe use of recycled plastics in packaging for cosmetics and home care products, and several follow-up activities are underway to further support this mission. As we transition from project completion to ongoing efforts, the CosPaTox Consortium is currently focused on several important tasks:

  • Finalization of the CosPaTox DIN Spec: We are in the final stages of developing the CosPaTox DIN Specification, which will provide standardized criteria for the industry.
  • Further Scientific Publications: Our team is actively working on additional scientific publications to disseminate our findings further and contribute to the broader scientific community. These publications will address topics that are underrepresented or could not be fully explored in the guideline or dossier, providing further details and evidence to support our measurements and conclusions.
  • Presentation of CosPaTox Results: We are organizing the presentation of our results in specialized journals and at industry events, ensuring that our insights reach a wide audience of stakeholders and experts.

As we move forward, CosPaTox, rooted in Forum Rezyklat, will continue to support various post-project activities. We sincerely appreciate the continued backing from Forum Rezyklat. Further, our dissemination documents will be hosted under the umbrella of Cosmetics Europe within a dedicated Task Force, where they will be managed by experts. Importantly, Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), representing the recycling sector, will also participate in the Task Force to ensure that their crucial input from the value chain is incorporated. This arrangement ensures ongoing access to and engagement with our work, allowing us to keep the documentation up-to-date and create updated versions as needed.

The success of CosPaTox is not just a reflection of our collective expertise but also our shared commitment to driving change within the industry. We believe that our work will inspire companies, including those who have previously hesitated to use recycled plastics, to embrace these materials with confidence in their safety and quality. By providing clear, science-based recommendations, CosPaTox has laid the foundation for a more sustainable, circular economy in packaging.
