Bio: Dr. Michael Scriba
Dr. Michael Scriba (Solicitor) is advising several members of the plastics value chain on circularity for plastics at all levels. He is also chairing the international CosPaTox consortium which represents all parts of the value-chain, who are working together on recyclate quality standards for non-food packaging of the cosmetics and household cleaners industry.
Until the end of 2019 he was consultant to the CES (Circular Economy Solutions) team at Borealis’ headquarters in Vienna where he focussed on the development and implementation of a circular strategy for one of the largest polyolefin manufacturers. He also advised the management of the mtm group (Niedergebra and FĂĽrstenwalde, Germany, today Borealis Group of Companies), one of the most important recycling companies for mixed polyolefins with a total capacity of approx. 100,000 tonnes per year. As managing partner of the mtm group he was responsible for the restructuring and growth of the company covering the areas of raw material supply, marketing, PR, legal, international, and corporate strategy from 2001 until mid-2016. Prior to this, he had been one of those in charge of establishing the ground-breaking first “Green Dot” EPR-scheme and plastics plastic packaging recycling in Germany (starting in 1991).
Scriba headed the Association of Plastics Recyclers (BVSE – FV Kunststoffrecycling) for several years before joining the Management Committee of Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) in January 2011. For PRE he set up the first working group for recyclers of mixed plastics/mixed polyolefins. As a member of Round Table Eco-Design of the Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V. (IK, Bad Homburg) he participated in the development of a comprehensive project management guide for eco-design in the packaging industry. Until recently he was member of the Expert Group III of ZSVR which defined the minimum standard for the measuring of recyclability of packaging in Germany.
As a board member of both PCEP (Polyolefins in a Circular Economy Platform) and Ceflex (Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging) he made an important contribution to the development of two new vertical business associations of the value chain for polyolefins based on his comprehensive experience on the European level.
Scriba has published numerous articles on the collection, sorting and recycling of plastics. He is a regular speaker on these topics at national and international conferences.
